Lesson 102 – The Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven – Part 2

“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.” Mat. 16:19

We have already seen that binding has nothing to do with the devil. So what are these keys of binding and loosing? This study is too important to just answer the question right away. We must first lay a good foundation of Scripture before getting to the answer. One thing that will help us is to know if these Key words are used anywhere else in Scripture. The Key words are: “Keys,” “Bind,” “Loose,” and “Kingdom of Heaven.” This lesson will focus on the words ‘Bind’ and ‘Loose.’

* Bind as it is used in Matthew 16:19 has an idea of being legally bound to something or by something or someone.
* Loose is just the opposite as used in the New Testament. It is being set free from a legal obligation or chains.

Paul uses both of these words in an easy to understand example in Romans 7:2 “For the woman which has a husband is bound by the law to him as long as he lives; but if the husband is dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.” He uses the same words again in 1 Corinthians 7:27.

He uses it a third time in 1 Corinthians 7:39. “A wife is bound as long as her husband lives; but if her husband is dead, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.”

Bind also is used throughout the New Testament to denote being bound by chains. For example, Jesus uses it in Matthew 12:29. He is teaching that He must bind the strong man, the devil, before He plunders the devils house. He was speaking of Himself defeating the devil at the cross.

We also find it in many of the parables when Jesus says something like, “Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Many parables end this way. This came from Matthew 22:13.

So here is what we can understand so far about the key words Bind and Loose.

* It is being in a legal situation that you have no control over. You are in chains to it.
* The only way to be loosed from the obligation is by death.

So now these questions arise:
? What or Who do we have the authority and ability to bind or set free?
? How do we bind them or set them free?
? What is it that we are binding them or setting them free from?
? What does that have to do with the Keys to the Kingdom of heaven?

Here is a clue to what we will discover in the next lessons:

Romans 7:6 “But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.” Notice:

* We are ‘released’ (loosed) from the Law
* We have died to that which we were bound
* Now we serve in the newness of the Spirit not in the Law.
